Following the hottest, driest summer on record, the rain returned for our Finals Weekend over the August Bank Holiday.

A few lucky finalists played in the dry but some finals were played in drizzle, some in heavy rain, and some had to be abandoned until the next day. Everybody experienced a green much heavier than it had been all season.

Much to Alan’s relief, all the finals were completed in time for the presentations on the Monday afternoon. The sun even made a brief appearance.

The weather, however, couldn’t dampen the good spirit in which all the matches were played, watched by a supportive audience for all the players.

The weekend was rounded off with another generous buffet, prepared and provided by club members and a raffle. All of which were organised on the day by Alison, Jenny, Megan, Angie, Sheila, and others. The bar was manned throughout the afternoon, so thanks go to the day’s chief barman Mark and everyone who helped to make the day a success.

Jean is presented with a vase as a thank you from the club for all the years she has spent organising the weekly roll-ups, turning up in all weathers, just in case someone fancied a game.

Torrington Ladies Pairs Tournament

Congratulations to Iris and Kay, winners of this year’s annual Ladies Pairs Tournament at Torrington. The all-day tournament involves several rounds of matches against ladies from all over Devon. After winning all their matches, Iris and Kay claimed victory in the final.

Arthur Griffiths Cup, 2025

With the weather being unhelpful last season, the 2025 edition of the Arthur Griffiths Cup was held over to this year. 15 pairs took part, with the first round being four mini leagues and the Semi-final between the top team in each league.

The matches were played with friendly rivalry and players enjoyed tea, cakes and biscuits before the Semi-finals and Final.

The Final was a close-fought match with both pairs ‘with all to play for’ on the final end. Spectators gave their enthusiastic support to both teams! Alan Mathias and Marian Bond came out the winners, with second place going to Sue Stow and Alan Nield.

Thanks go to Andy Smith for organising, the greenkeepers, the tea makers, the bar staff and the supporters for an enjoyable afternoon.

Mayor’s Charity Day 3rd May 2026

This year the Mayor’s charity was Rock2Recovery — dedicated to supporting veterans and their families. The club hosted 12 teams of inexperienced and new bowlers for a match of four games of four ends. With the support of club members, a buffet lunch and cream tea, everyone seemed to enjoy the day. Even the rain held off until the last players had finished.

The result was secondary to the camaraderie of the day but congratulations go to The Birdies who were this year’s winners.

Nora Gee Cup 2025

Due to the weather last season the 2025 Nora Gee Cup competition was held over until this year. Nora Gee was a lady connected with both Okehampton and North Tawton and this one-day friendly triples competition is held annually between the ladies of the two clubs. Unfortunately North Tawton retained the Cup — at least until we hold the 2026 edition later in the season!
